Match Report

Catus CC v Bristol Venturers CC 18 September 2022

Friendly Cricket

In near perfect conditions, Catus Cricket Club welcomed their friends from Bristol to the Lac Vert. It was so good to see many familiar faces once again after a break of four years. The match started at 12 and it was decided to make it 35 overs, time being of the essence as the main fundraiser of the year followed the cricket and captain Sutton was required to light the BBQ.

Venturers batted first and opening pair, Wilson and Beecroft put on 96 for the first wicket. Wilson was out just three runs short of his fifty to a virtually unplayable yorker from Atiq which sent his leg stick cart wheeling. Beecroft made 27 before being brilliantly caught by Pound off the bowling of local star Ijaz. The only other significant contribution was from Miles who was on 18 undefeated runs when the innings closed on 155 for 5. Runs and wickets were virtually evenly shared amongst the nine different Catus bowlers.

In reply, Farouk (13) made steady progress but both Ijaz and Saqib went cheaply and Catus seemed to be in trouble when captain Sutton perished when the score was only 24. Debutant Amal scored steadily to reach 53 when he retired, Pound (30*) and Atiq (29*) also retired which allowed the evergreen Kavanagh to hit the winning runs. The target being reached after 24 overs for the loss of four wickets. Fallon was comfortably the Venturers’ best bowler taking three wickets for 27.

A quick tidy up and dash to the salle des fetes for the BBQ followed.

Thank you to scorer Burden and Umpires Stirling and Coldrick. See you next year.
