Match Report Catus versus Eymet, 20th May

On a perfect day for cricket, Catus played Eymet in the first league fixture of the season. The first real contest of the season was confidently approached with all the enthusiasms and optimism brought by the start of a new season.

Eymet batted first and were quickly put under pressure by the Catus attack of Karim and Atik who both bowled accurately and with some venom. Atik was particularly unlucky not to take any wickets, only conceding 10 runs off his eight overs. Karim was more impressive taking two wickets and conceding only 11 runs. Skipper Shafik took a wicket with his first ball then had 15 runs taken from the next five balls, however the Catus fielders managed to spill two chances during his eventful first over. Rahim bowled with his customary control and when the home side were reduced to 79 for six in the 27th over, it looked as though Catus would be chasing less than a 100. However a dogged 51 by Nigel Jones took Eymet's score to 119. Jones reached his 50 on the pen ultimate ball and was then beautifully caught in the deep by 'soft hands' Steve Taylor on the last ball of the innings.

Ken Sutton and Farouk opened a somewhat cautious reply for Catus. Some hostile bowling by Newman did for Sutton but Farouk weathered the storm making a creditable 17. Green helmeted Rahim scored 13 but was never settled. Sadly when batsman number 10 came to the crease, only Rahul had taken responsibility for reaching the target with a solid 29. Swashbuckling Rahim provide a glimmer of hope with a contribution of 14, but all was lost when he was caught behind 'having a go'.

So Catus ended with 105 runs, 15 runs short of a very gettable target and a beautiful day for cricket was only slightly spoilt by decidedly under par batting, and a lack of quality beer on the way home.
